The baptismal parish records, from 1838, for Halsall St Cuthbert are generally both legible and clear. However, there are a few issues that users of this database should perhaps bear in mind:-

The baptisms were written onto pre-printed pages but without pre-printed page numbers and record numbers. The record numbers that have been entered are at times erratic and out of sequence, with some records not being numbered at all, and some numbers amended.

The transcriptions have been made as the records are written including errors i.e. every effort has been made not to interpret the records. There are quite a few instances of the information being written in the incorrect column. Generally these are quite obvious errors such as occupation and abode being entered in each other's columns and then corrected or not. However, sometimes a name may be added, struck out, and then another name added. To help users, notes have been added to record errors and these have the following format:-

e.g. "Mother's Christian name amended from 'Mary'" – meaning that the word "Mary" has been written, struck out and replaced with the name given in the transcribed record.

There are a few incidences where it is impossible to identify a word with confidence. The most common examples are the surnames 'Carr' and 'Cave'. Where possible the family unit has been cross-checked against the next chronological census and a note to this effect has been added.
