In 1875, Bishop Bernard O'Reilly of Liverpool gave permission for Lady Mary Stapleton-Bretherton to build a church on the Ditton Hall estate to be served by the priests of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The church was opened on 8th May 1879, and serves almost exactly the same area as does St Michael, Hough Green (Church of England).
The church is of a considerable size, being 120 ft long and 60 ft wide across the nave (80 ft wide across the transepts). The tower contains a peal of six bells.
