St. Sylvester Roman Catholic Church, Silvester Street

St. Sylvester's Church was first opened in a temporary building in April 1875. The schools had already been opened in May 1874. On 2 Sep 1889 the new church was opened and the 'Lady Altar' in stone was erected the following May. A number of additions were made to the church after 1889, these include - the 'Coxe Memorial Pulpit' unveiled by the Bishop on 3 July 1904; the beautiful new 'High Altar' unveiled and blessed by the bishop on 11 February 1906; the Shrine of the Sacred Heart blessed and opened in June 1908; and a new bell blessed by the Bishop in July 1911. |
