St Oswald Street, Old Swan
1840 - Present Day
![]() | |
The foundation stone of St. Oswald's Church was laid in 1839 and the church was opened on 4 August 1842. Augustus Welby Pugin was the architect of the church and the funds for building were raised by subscription and donation. A school was also built in 1845.
In 1939 it was decided to extend the church to make better provision for the greatly increased congregation. A number of human remains, monuments and tombstones were removed in preparation for the extension, but the building was delayed by the outbreak of war, and it was not until 2 October 1957 that the new church was opened by the Archbishop of Liverpool (Dr. Heenan).
