Barnes Square Wesleyan Chapel pre 1913
Barnes Square Wesleyan Chapel pre 1913

Methodist worship started in 1812 in cottage dwellings in the Oakenshaw District along Sparth Road namely Stocks Row. The cottages and stocks have long since disappeared having occupied a site near or in the grounds of Mercer Park.

The Wesleyans had a chapel at Oakenshaw, on land provided by the Fort Family from 1829. Barnes Square Chapel was built in 1863, replacing an earlier building which had become too small. John Mercer laid the foundation stone. The chapel that stood on Barnes Square was built by John Mercer as a Wesleyan Chapel, becoming Methodist after Methodist Union in 1932.

The Wesleyan Methodist chapel in Barnes Square was closed for worship on Mar 26th 1981 and demolished as unsafe. All that remains is the burial ground and the adjacent school, and the congregation initially moved into the Sunday school. This has since been closed and the building is up for sale.

They also had a Mission room on Sydney Street.
