Marriages at St Mary
in the Parish of Hale, Widnes

The early nineteenth century Hale marriage registers were severely burned and only fragments remain. The first part of the 1813 to 1837 register was lost with surviving entries commencing circa 1821. Of the following register, small, partially legible, fragments survive for only eight entries. The remains of these two registers have therefore been amalgamated.

A convention used by scribes in the 1813 to 1837 register was to write the abode as 'of this parish' on one line, with a second line used if the groom or bride's place of origin was elsewhere e.g. 'of the parish of Prescot'. Although the first lines of abodes were destroyed in many of the entries, if the second line of the register was not used then it has been inferred that the abode was 'of this parish'. Such inferred information is encased in square brackets.
