The parish is made up of several small hamlets, including Woodgate, Lowick Bridge and Lowick Green. Like many Lakeland villages farming was the main form of employment, but there were also tanneries, a spade and shovel factory, basket makers, a blacksmith and a corn mill.
The church was rebuilt twice in the 19th century, but records suggest that a chapel existed prior to 1577.
