“TODMORDEN as a chapel of ease to the Parish Church would probably originally send its Registers to Rochdale. This custom (if it ever existed) appears to have fallen into disuse early in the 17th Century, as none of the entries in the following manuscripts appear in the Registers of the Mother Church. The Registers now preserved at Todmorden commence in 1660, it therefore appears clear that the whole of the records of baptisms, marriages, and burials between 1624 and that date, except what are contained in the following pages, are irrevocably lost.
“At what date the Curates of Todmorden were authorized to baptize or marry the members of their congregation is unknown, but interments certainly occasionally took place there as early as 1587.
“The following were found at the Diocesan Registry, Chester, and are written on slips of parchment, being evidently the manuscripts forwarded by the Curate from time to time.”
