Burials at St Mary
in the Parish of Todmorden

1) All pages up to the year 1740 on the film have been transcribed.
Where there are years missing in the record between 1680 and 1710 these pages appear to be missing or records were not kept.

2) Record numbers 31 to 55 are not the correct first names but a part of a sentence in Latin which distorts the name because of compound and surrounding words. The clerk **(see note below) started to use Latin on these pages, sometimes this was incorrect Latin. I have transcribed exactly what was written but please be aware of the following:
No person in a Lancashire town or village was ever likely to be actually named Abrahami, Gratia or Guilielmus but would be Abraham, Grace or William.
Please see the list below which gives a guide which may help you find the person's probable actual name:-

OTHER LATIN TERMS:-
filia = daughter
filius = son
infans = infant
Vidua = Widow

LATIN NAMES:-
Abrahamus/ Abrahami = Abraham
Alicia = Alice or much less commonly Alicia
Anthonii = Anthony
Anna = Ann or less often Anna
Carolus = Charles
Danielis = Daniel
Elizabetha = Elizabeth
Georgius = George
Guilielmus = William
Jahannes, Johanes, Johannes, Johannis, Johanis = John
Jacobus = James or much less commonly Jacob
Josephus = Joseph
Maria = Mary or much less commonly Maria
Richardi = Richard
Robertus = Robert

** The Clerk and Curate at this time was Henry Krabtree (from 1662-1685) who was somewhat notorious in the district for his eccentricity. However, we have him to thank for the first consistent keeping of Parish records, so perhaps he can be forgiven his eccentricities.

3) The occupation Shalloon Weaver (Record No.133) - A weaver of cloth who made Shalloon, a sort of worsted cloth of the type usually used as linings or for blankets or coverlets.

4) In 1721 and 1722 the clerk began to put an X beside some entries. This seems to be when a person is not a child of or wife of anyone, but it isn't clear exactly why the cross is there.

Again in 1727 the clerk began to put an X beside some entries and it isn't clear why.
