This register was procured by Mr Joseph Seddon who had the honour of being appointed first Church Warden in St Stephen's Church and his name inserted in the Consecration Sentence. Mr George Nabb was the other Church Warden July 23 179? The revd. Nicholas Mosley Cheek built St Stephen's Church at his own expense which cost near six thousand pounds. The first stone was laid April 25 1793 and it was opened for divine service April 20 1794. The first stone was laid in prayer, and the top stone in praise. The inscription on the plate for the first stone is as follows, Glory be to God on high, and on earth, peace, good will towards men. This sacred edifice was erected by the revd. Nicholas Mosley Cheek Clerk, and is named after the first Arian Martyr St Stephen. The first stone of this church was laid by the revd. James Bayley M.A. and fellow of the Collegiate Church of Manchester the 25 day of April Anno Domini 1793. The founder N. M. Cheek was licenced the first Minister by Dr Clever Lord Bishop of Chester July 24 1794, on which day the Church was consecrated.
