The ecclesiastical parish of St Peter was created in 1842 and was originally a district chapelry of the townships of Salesbury, Wilpshire, Osbaldeston, Clayton-le-Dale and Dinckley. The chapel of St Peter was built in 1806 and consecrated in 1807. The present building was erected on the site of the old chapel in 1882.
