Baptisms at St Bartholomew
in the Town of Whitworth, Rochdale

For the format of dates in Registers prior to 1752, see notes on the Julian Calendar

There are no entries for the Years 1764 and 1775.

1.) The entries from May 24th 1778 - Apr 1781 are missing.

2.) In October 1783 a stamp duty was introduced of 3 pence on every entry in a parish register.

This event is touched upon in the Whitworth register when the Clerk wrote the following sentence:

"Here came in the duty 3d Pr Baptisms &c"

This entry comes on the third page of the register after the entry for Sarah Hoyle, - parents Charles and Sarah who were the last baptism on 28th Sept 1783 before the tax.

There were no further references to the tax in these Bishop's Transcripts so probably the record was kept elsewhere.

3.) No-one was mentioned as baptising each individual child in the Whitworth register.

However, at the end of each year the BT's were signed by several people.I've included a list of these:-

Date  Minister  Warden 1  Warden 2  Clerk
May 1778   Edw. Taylor  JamesHey
Apr 1781   John Stafford  John Lord
Apr 1782   John Stafford  John Clegg

Apr 1790     John Jackson    James Chadwick
Apr 1792   John Stafford      James Chadwick
20 Apr 1793     Thomas Fletcher    James Chadwick
24 Apr 1794   John Stafford  James Scholfield  Jno. Lord  James Chadwick
25 Apr 1795   John Stafford  James Scholfield  John Lord  James Chadwick
23 Apr 1796   Thos. Bellas    John Lord  James Chadwick

Mar 1798   John Stafford
19 Apr 1799   Thos. Bellas  James Hardman
19 Apr 1800   Thos. Bellas  James Hardman

I've included full date when they stated it but otherwise the year and last month on the sheet signed. Also all names signed are included.

4) Intak/ Intax:This area is NNEast of Whitworth village. The spelling of this abode is problematic.A map dated about 1851 spells it Intake. However the early clerks spelt it variously Intak and Intax. As clerks often wrote the letter k in a strange manner the x interpretation may really be a k but I have transcribed these to the nearest letter that it looks most like.
