Baptisms at Hallfold URC (formerly Hallfold Chapel)
in the District of Whitworth, Rochdale

There are multiple overlapping source registers for the period 1752 to 1837, due in part to a rift between ministers which resulted in two registers being active concurrently. In our transcriptions, we have used all available sources, including original registers and copy registers, but for the purpose of presenting and ordering the material, we have based this on the copy register compiled by Rev Mr Thorburn who included extensive notes explaining the sources. We have divided that copy register into four parts as follows:

1752 - 1802 : This is based on the registers kept by Rev Mr Burgess, who despite the register's dates left Hallfold Chapel in 1790, and visited only occasionally thereafter. This overlaps in dates with the following two registers

1790 - 1794 : Rev Mr Towers was elected to be minister, and kept a separate register, resulting in an overlap between these dates. This register was discontinued in 1794, and entries continued to be made in Mr Burgess's book until the start of the following book

1797 - 1821 : Rev. Thomas Robinson was appointed and this register was kept by him. Some entries continued to be made in Mr Burgess's book. After Thomas Robinson's death, visiting ministers continued to add entries in this book. Eventually Rev. W. Gibson was appointed in May 1821

1822 - 1837 : Rev. W. Gibson began this register but was expelled from the Chapel. Rev. Mr Thorburn took over in 1834
