Lancashire General Directory 1818

Transcribed from FHL. 874424

Rochdale is situated in the four following townships, which comprise the parish:-

1st – Hundersfield, containing the following hamlets, Littleborough, Hundersfield, and Todmorden.
2nd – Spotland, containing Failinge, Healey, Whitworth, Brandwood, Chadwick. Cheesden and Catley-lane.
3rd – Butterworth, freehold side, and lord’s side.
4th – Castleton, near side, and farther side.

The town is situated under a range of hills, called Blackstone Edge, which for the greatest part of the year are covered in snow. These mountains however, produce coal, slate, and free-stone in abundance; and likewise inclose several beautiful valleys, which stretch in various directions, possessing fine streams of water, so essential for the use of the machinery of the various manufactories.
