Marriages at St Mary the Virgin
in the
Parish of Prescot
Following the implementation of the Hardwicke Marriage Act in 1754, this parish appears to have adopted a practice of maintaining two Marriage Registers, one for marriages by Banns and one for marriages by Licence.
The Register of Marriages 1754 to 1801 (PRO ref PR3404/1/28) appears to contain marriages by Licence and is concluded in 1801 when the practice of separating marriages appears to have been abandoned.
The Register of Marriages 1788 to 1812 (PRO ref PR3404/1/29) begins by recording marriages by Banns. From 1801 onwards, following the end of the register above, this register appears to record marriages by both Banns and Licence.
