Like the rest of Oldham, Werneth developed as an industrial district in the 19th century. The Platt Brothers large engineering firm dominated the area, producing machinery for Oldham’s cotton spinning industry. Platt Bros. owned most of the surrounding area and buildings, and in the 1890s it employed a large proportion of the population of Oldham.

The prosperity of the area led to the building of large houses and mansions, and part of Werneth was known as Oldham’s grand west end.
