The District of Royton, Oldham in the County of -- Lancashire --
|
|
Royton was the first town where a water powered cotton mill was built, and when steam powered engines replaced water power Royton was home to some of the largest mills in England. Textile mills employed 80% of the local population even up until the 1950s, when the industry began to decline. Mills closed and many were demolished until the last mill closed in 1998. Today, fewer than a dozen mills are still standing, the majority of which are used for light engineering or as distribution centres.
