Hathershaw is one of the oldest recorded named places of Oldham, occurring in a deed for 1280 with the spelling Halselinechaw Clugh.
In common with the rest of Oldham the area was characterised in the 19th century by a large number of cotton spinning mills and high density terraced housing. The remaining mill buildings have been redeveloped into business units.
