Baptisms at All Hallows
in the Parish of Mitton

For the format of dates in Registers prior to 1752, see notes on the Julian Calendar

In the period of these registers, the parish of Mitton fell into three areas of administration. In Yorkshire, within the West Division of the Wapentake of Staincliff and Ewecross, there were the townships of Bashall Eaves, West Bradford, Mitton and Sawley together with Tosside, which was extraparochial. The Chapelries of Waddington and Grindleton were in the parish of Mitton, but Waddington has its own registers from 1599 and Grindleton from 1744. In Lancashire, within the Upper Division of the Blackburn Hundred, lay the townships of Laund and Old Booth while within the Lower Division lay the townships of Aighton, Bailey and Chaigley. The township of Little Mitton was in the parish of Whalley. All these areas have been in Lancashire since the local government reorganisation of 1974.

The records here are extracted from either the Parish Register (1610-1810) or Bishop’s Transcripts (1610-1812). For some parts of Parish register there are illegible items which are taken from the Bishop’s Transcripts. In some cases where Parish Register entries are missing then Bishop’s Transcripts used. The page numbers are allocated to represent individual 12-month periods for Bishops Transcripts and individual pages in Parish Registers and do not refer to any visible numbering on the actual transcripts.

During the Civil War and the Commonwealth period (1643-1653) many registers contain gaps in the entries.

Also, during the Commonwealth period (1649-1653), births were recorded rather than baptisms. From 1653 until the Restoration in 1660 civil registers were kept instead of church registers, when again births were recorded rather than Baptisms.
