In February, 1880, a meeting was held to consider how the religious needs of the Withington neighbourhood might be met, and later that year a building committee was formed. Services were initially held at the Town Hall, and the foundation stone of the new Church was laid in July 1882. The Rev B. Nightingale, in his book 'Lancashire Nonconformity, vol IV', described the Withington Congregational Church as a 'handsome and commodious structure, which will seat upwards of 800 people'. It was opened for public worship on 7th June 1883. |
