[This is a transcription of the 'FIRST KNOWN REGISTER OF BAPTISMS, MARRIAGES and BURIALS AT NEWTON CHAPEL IN THE DIOCESE OF CHESTER'. The Register is badly damaged, with pages lost or reduced to fragments and the edges worn away. The document used for this transcription was arranged and annotated by H.T. Crofton in 1905. It differs from the transcription made earlier by John Higson and John Owen. This is explained in the following note by Mr. Crofton on page 2 of the document.]

In 1862-3 the fragments were carefully examined and transcribed by Mr John Higson and John Owen, and the Transcript is at the Manchester Reference Library in vol XLI of the Owen MSS. It supplies many beginnings and ends of entries, but the arrangement was faulty. The entries as given in Hist. of Newton Chapelry were given from that Manuscript and need correction in order and otherwise.

There are no copies filed at Chester so far as Rector Letts was able to learn. He intended to record them on the interleaves. There may be some marriage Licences recorded at Chester. The wills of persons belonging to the Chapelry will be found in the volumes of the Lancashire and Cheshire Record Society (Manchr. Reference Library) – and most are extracted so far as name goes in Hist. of N. Chapelry.
