Ancoats is close to Manchester City Centre and earned the nickname of Little Italy during the 19th century when many Italians migrated into the area.

The Industrial Revolution played a key role in the growth of Ancoats and brought with it the arrival of Cotton Mills, Iron Foundries and Engineering Factories.

The area subsequently became densely populated; the poorest people living in cellars and others living in back to back housing with no private sanitation.
