Burials at St Mary the Virgin
in the Parish of Leigh

Most of the burial data for Leigh St Mary parish church 1701-1766 presented here have been extracted from the LDS film of the register (559189). However, in the first few years there are a number of entries present in the Bishop's Transcripts that are missing from the church register. I had previously extracted the burials of people with an Atherton abode from the LDS films of the Leigh register, and also the Bishop's Transcripts (LDS Film 1545556), and placed them on the LAN-OPC Atherton Parish site. These are all included here. For completeness, I have also added 12 non-Athertonian burials which are in the transcripts but not the register, as given in LPRS 155 (Taylor, Ken (2002) The registers of Leigh Parish Church 1701-1753. Lancashire Parish Register Society vol. 155).
Prior to the introduction of printed registers in 1813, stillborn child burials were entered in dated sequence with other burials. From mid-1814 stillborn child burials were written into the printed boxes of an existing burial, sharing the same entry number as the main burial, but with no obvious family associations. The stillborn burials were sometimes dated, sometimes not. Those with dates were either the same date as the main burial or within a few days. In the records presented here we have assumed that undated stillborn burials occurred on the same day as the main burial for that entry number, but have added a note [undated] as a warning that the actual burial may have been a few days different.
For consistency, I have used the modern spellings of the following townships which were in Leigh Parish in the 18th century: Astley, Atherton, Bedford, Pennington, Shakerley, Tyldesley and Westleigh.
