History

There was a Friends Meeting House in Twist Lane from 1665 to 1837 according to the National Index of Parish Registers.

This was used for preparatory meetings of Hardshaw East Monthly Meeting (also no longer extant) and the appropriate records of that meeting are listed below.

I know nothing else at present about this meeting house, or about the history of the Friends in Leigh.

Registers

Abbreviations: M - marriage, Bu - burial. Others are defined where they first occur.

Note that Friends do not practice baptism but their registers do record births

Original Registers

Hardshaw East original records prior to 1837 were surrendered to the Registrar General under the Non-Parochial Registers Act of 1840. They are at the National Archives (formerly Public Record Office) at Kew under the following references:
Births 1776-1797 [RG6 581]
Births 1797-1836 [RG6 1532]
Bu 1776-1798 [RG6 582]
Bu 1799-1829 [RG6 1531]
Bu 1830-1837 [RG6 1536]
There are no registers before 1776, nor any marriages for Hardshaw East as a whole (only for some of the preparatory meetings, but not including Leigh) in the NA catalogue. These registers must exist somewhere as they have been microfilned (see below).

Original Registers after 1837 are at Manchester Archives and Local Studies (at Manchester Central Library - MCL) [M85] and can be consulted by appointment. Dates held are as follows:
Births 1837-1863 Bu 1837-1901

MCL [refs below] and Lancashire Record Office (LRO) [MF 1/49-1/51, split not known] have microfilm copies covering a wider date range than the above:
Births 1655-1784 M 1660-1777 1817-1837 Bu 1665-1776 [MFPR 402]
Births 1784-1837 Bu 1776-1798 [MFPR 403]
Bu 1799-1837 [MFPR 391]
(The LRO lists slightly different dates than the above0

Quaker Digest Registers

When they surrendered their records, the Friends first transcribed information into these digests to keep for their own use. The Digests which run to 1837 can be consulted at the Friends Library in London [ref not known] or on microfilm at the Society of Genealogists, also in London [films 3363-3394]

Other Transcripts and Indexes

The higher level Lancashire Quarterly Meeting kept indexes of Births, Marriages and Burials for the whole county. These can be consulted on microfilm at MCL:
Births 1635-1837 M 1652-1837 Bu 1654-1838 [MFPR 938]
