Burials at All Saints
in the Parish of Hindley

Introductory notes to the Burial Register for 1834 - 1864

Numbering Errors

In the burial register from 29 Apr 1834 through 13 Dec 1864, the clerks made a mess of the numbering system. It appears that page and entry numbers were handwritten into the blank printed pages well in advance of actual burials. All is in order till page 219 which was entered as page 119. On the next page the error was compounded when the entry 1756 was written twice in succession. When the burials reached this point the clerk realised what had happened and corrected both page and entry numbers to their true values. The date was then January 1849.

The corrections continued through 17 Jul 1851 when the last correct number was entry 2216 on page 277. From here on, the page and entry numbers were not corrected, with the consequence that page 277 is followed by page 178 and pages 178-277 appear twice in the same register, though separated by many years. Also, the last number on page 277 is duplicated so that entry 2116 occurs at the bottom of correct page 277 and at the top of duplicate page 178.

The next error occurred in April 1856 on duplicate page 277 (it should have been 377) when the entry numbers jumped from 3010 to 3111. The mistake was not corrected so the register has no entries 3011-3110. The register finally closed with entry 4707 on page 476 – it should have been entry 4608 on page 576. The next register from 14 Dec 1864 on, used pages with pre-printed page and entry numbers.

Missing Pages

Two pages with 16 burials are missing from the film of the register, between 31 Dec 1861 and 22 Jan 1862.

Reburials

Entry 2252 records the following “On the thirty first day of October, 1851, 48 bodies were removed from the Wesleyan Burying Ground, at the request of Mr. George Naylor & Mr. Atherton, and re-interred in the Hindley Church Yard by permission of the Lord Bishop of Chester. [signed] Edwd. Hill Incumbent, W.B. Findlay Curate”
