Burials at St Mary
in the Parish of Dalton-in-Furness

For the format of dates in Registers prior to 1752, see notes on the Julian Calendar

These records are Burials from the Bishops Transcripts for the Parish of Dalton in Furness which includes the Chapelries of Ireleth, Rampside, and Walney. They cover the period 1854 (Walney only), 1855 to 1862, 1864 to 1865, and 1870 to 1871. Two Parish Registers cover this period and in all cases the Bishops Transcripts refer to the Page and Entry Nos of the original Parish Registers.

Registers
The first Register in the Bishops Transcripts is the last part of an ongoing Register and is from 2 Jan 1855 (Page 109, Entry 871) to 16 Dec 1860 (Page 200, Entry 1600). However, it should be noted that Walney Chapel records for 1854 were inserted into the Register on Pages 110 and 111.
The second Register is from 7 Jan 1861 (Page 1, Entry 2) to 20 Dec 1871 (Page 71, Entry 562), except for the following omissions:
Entries 364 to 373 inclusive on Pages 46 and 47 are missing, being the records for 1863 (between Entry 363 on 5 Dec 1862 and Entry 374 on 23 Jan 1864)
Entries 424 to 504 inclusive on Pages 53 to 63 are missing, being the records for 1866, 1867, 1868, and 1869 (between Entry 423 on 26 Dec 1865 and Entry 505 on 2 Nov 1869).

A new Cemetery in Dalton from 1862 acquired the majority of interments after that year. The Burials at the new Cemetery were not included in the Bishops Transcripts and this is why the numbers of Burials per year in the Bishops Transcripts drop significantly after 1862.

Chapels
The three Chapelries of Ireleth, Rampside, and Walney have/had graveyards. Burials at Walney Chapel in 1854, 1855, and 1857 are clearly identified in the Bishops Transcripts (see Notes associated with these records). Burials at Walney at other times, and burials at the other Chapels, cannot be identifed with certainty but the following information may assist those wishing to trace the location of specific burials.
Ireleth - Minister in this period primarily H. N. Walton. There are only three Burials by H. N. Walton in these Bishops Transcripts and Ireleth burials may be in a separate Register.
Rampside - In this period, the Ministers were primarily W. Dawson (1855 to 1858) and J. Park (after 1858). Abodes include Rampside, Roe or Roa Island, Roose, Peaseholme, and Concle.
Walney - Minister in this period primarily J. Park. Abodes include Southend, Northend, Northscale, Hindpool, and Biggar

All but one of the Burials recorded in the Bishops Transcrips after 1862 were conducted by J. Park i.e. following the creation of the new Dalton Cemetery in 1862. This and other evidence in the records suggest that many of these burials were at the Rampside and/or Walney Chapels.
