St Paul’s church at Rusland built 1745 and rebuilt 1866-69. It was built opposite an ancient school, which closed in 1890 when a new school was built near Satterthwaite to serve both parishes. A parish room replaced it for use by the Sunday School and for religious and other meetings.

The parish is sparsely populated and very rural. The church is quite isolated, but has an elevated position with extensive views of the surrounding hills. Arthur Ransome, the well known children’s author is buried here.
