By 1814 there was an urgent need for a Catholic chapel as the number of Catholics in the area had increased and Towneley Chapel was too small.
Burnley Wood Chapel, known as St Marys Chapel was built in 1819 a little above Towneley Lodge where Tarleton Avenue is today, opposite Brunswick Street.
After the opening of St Marys Church on Yorkshire Street in 1849, the chapel fell into disuse, a portion of the building was demolished and the remainder used as a private house.
