Burials at St Mary the Virgin
in the Town of Blackburn
For the format of dates in Registers prior to 1752, see notes on the Julian Calendar
The following notes are offered on the register for the years 1772 to 1792.
Between Sep 14 1775 and Apr 24 1782 many of the relationship indicators were omitted from the register in order to fit two columns of entries onto a single page. Our knowledge of the form in which entries were made allows us to infer some of these relationships with reasonable certainty. In these instances the inferred relationship is shown in square brackets thus: [s]. Relationships shown followed by a question mark thus: d? are guesses based mainly on the knowledge that during that period most deaths were of children. Therefore these indicators only show the rough balance of probabilities and cannot be relied upon to anything like the same degree as the bracketed ones. Put simply much of the time d? will be correct (more than half the time) but on occasion will be incorrect.
The following notes are offered on the register for the years 1793 to 1803.
Lost data.
One or more entries appear to be missed from the bottom of the page in the image of p46. i.e. at end Jul 1796.
Likewise for page 53, i.e. between Jan 25 and Jan 27, 1797.
Entries from which data are partially missed are indicated in the transcription.
The following notes are offered on the register for the years 1803 to 1812.
There is a major discontinuity between pages 113 and 115 of the register which affects entries between 9 Jan 1811 and 2 Aug 1811.
The transcriber noted a number of minor discontinuities, which are listed below. There could be other such small losses.

The New Blackburn Cemetery opened July 1st 1857. Blackburn cemetery is situated on Whalley New Road, Blackburn, on land purchased by the Blackburn Burial Board, which comprises 45 acres for the purpose of a cemetery on the former estate of Bank Hey in Little Harwood. All of the facilities in the cemetery are managed and maintained by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.
Before entry No 4390 in the Register of Burials for 1851 to 1858, it is recorded that the old part of the Parish Burial Ground closed from 1st July 1857. It is uncertain whether burials after this oint are in the church burial ground or the new cemetery.
The next Burial Register, 1858 to 1861, is divided into two sections. This register has pages with reprinted Page and Entry numbers. A note at the front of the register states "Parish Church Burials from Page 1 to Page 50. Cemetery Interments from Page 50 to Page 400".
Below this in a different hand the following caution is added. "Care Pages 49 - 60. These Page Numbers appear twice. See Note on second Page 49. See also Note on Page 34"
The Note on Page 34 follows a burial on 31 July 1858, saying:-
"N.B. Interment of persons dying within the township of Blackburn is prohibited in the grave yard of the Parish Church and St Peter's on and after the 1st of August 1858, except in vaults and walled graves."
Following this Note, the number of burials recorded in this section declines sharply, though burials continue to be recorded up to 1900 and beyond (later burials are excluded from this filming). This set of records is presented as the Register of Burials for 1858 to 1900.
The original preprinted Page 49 starts with the burial of William Henry Field, Baronet, accompanied by the note "also entered on Page 49 preceding".
It then contains in large letters the note "The remainder of this Book contains Burials at the Cemetery". This note now has a cross through it. The lower part of the Page contains the following note:-
"The entry of Sir William Henry Fielden's Burial at the top of this page was subsequently transferred to Page 49 in the preceding part of the Book of the register. The Pages numbered 49 to 60 were inserted by me for the convenient entry of any interments that might take place in the Parish Church Yard and also within the vaults of the church in future years - Edward Birch, Vicar, March 27 188? (the last digit of the year is smudged)"
The reference to page inserted is to blank pages without preprinted numbers which have been inserted into the binding between the original Pages 48 and 49. These new pages have hand written Page and Entry numbers, so there is a duplication of these numbers within that physical Register Book.
The Pages from preprinted Page 50 to the end of the Register are marked explicitly "at the Cemetery". These records for Burials at the cemetery are presented as the Register of Burials for 1858 to 1861.
Given the Notes in the Register for 1858 to 1861, unless there is a Note accompanying an individual Burial, it is probable that all persons recorded in the Registers from 1861 were buried in the cemetery, though these subsequent Registers do not state that explicitly.
