Baptisms recorded in the Register for 1874 - 1883

This transcription is based on two source registers, a main register book in standard printed format, dated 1874-1883, and a handwritten book dated 1875-1879. The cover of the handwritten register describes itself on the cover as ‘Old Bapt. Register Aug.75 – Jun.79. (Transferred)’, and a note inside the front cover reads: ‘This Baptismal Register was begun by the Rev L Maglione first Rector of S Josephs, Audley Blackburn, on the 10 August 1875. The names have been copied by him into a proper Register, and the few omitted have been entered in their proper place by j. Canon Musseley, MR, in January 1906’. These two source registers are referred to in the transcription as ‘main’ (the printed register) and ‘old’ (the handwritten register).

The handwritten register contains abodes but not the priest’s name; when these were copied to the main register, abodes were omitted but the priest’s name was included.

The handwritten register also contains names written in English rather than Latin.

A question mark added to the birth date shows there is a discrepancy between the registers.

Some other information differs slightly between the two sources, and any important differences have been  recorded in this transcription. Where two versions of a surname are given, the spelling in the main register is given first, followed by the other version in brackets. When the spelling of a surname is queried in the main register by a note in the margin, both versions have been transcribed. If an alternative spelling has a question mark after it, this is how it is written in the register.

The errors in street names are transcribed as written in the register.
