Burials at St John the Baptist
in the Parish of Atherton

For the format of dates in Registers prior to 1752, see notes on the Julian Calendar

The burial records date from the consecration of Atherton Chapel in 1724 through 1857 when the graveyard was closed and the municipal Atherton Cemetery opened on Leigh Road. During this period Atherton was a chapelry in Leigh Parish. From 1724 through 1777 the Atherton Chapel burials were appended to the Leigh St Mary parish church registers. A separate register for Atherton commenced in 1778, but the practice of appending to the Leigh registers continued, though there are many burials in the Atherton register which were not written into the Leigh register. The data are presented here in four blocks:

1724-1777 entirely from the Leigh register.

1778-1812 from the separate Atherton Chapel register but cross-checked against the Leigh records, with variations noted.

1813-1852 The first complete register using the new printed registers; not cross-checked against Leigh records.

1852-1857 A partial register concluded when the burial ground was closed.
