Gin Pits Wesleyan Methodist

Not so much as a church, more a multi-functional community building. The building was situated at the bottom of School Street, it was a school during the week, on Sunday it was classed as a Sunday school and in the evening it had an evening service. Above the school were the draughtsmen's offices, which belonged to the Astley and Tyldesley collieries, also it was used as a changing room for the local football team. The school was open from 1904 to the 1960’s, and even today it is still providing a service to the community as a day nursery. The only parish records I had located for this chapel are for 85 baptisms between 1904 and 1941, copies of these baptisms are held at the History Shop in Wigan. If you wish to check any of these baptisms please e-mail me with your details and I will check them for you.
