St Michael and All Angels
St Michael and All Angels is the central parish Church of Ashton-under-Lyne. A settlement existed in this area long before the Norman Conquest of 1066 and there is mention of a Church on this site in the Domesday Book. St. Michael and All Angels was originally a Chapel of Ease for Manchester, but became a parish in 1281. Church registers date back to 1594. It is now a Grade 1 listed building best known for its 15th Century stained glass which depicts the story of St. Helena. Guided tours can be arranged to view this magnificent Church and its unusual interior. |
