The church was founded in 1850, and the building on Burlington St was built in 1852 with funds raised by Father Crombleholme of Chipping. He also incurred a large personal debt in building the church which worsened as his parishioners were affected by the cotton famine. During the time of the American Civil War supplies of raw cotton from the Southern States stopped and Lancashire’s mill workers became impoverished.

The financial problems escalated when the church and its contents were severely damaged during the anti-catholic Murphy riots in 1868.

It was intended that the church should have a tower and spire but the lack of money meant that these were never built.

In 2003 the parish was amalgamated with that of neighbouring St Mary's (whose church was later demolished) forming the new parish of St Mary of the Angels, which is based at the church of St Ann.

St Ann’s conducts one Mass in Polish every week, to serve the local Polish community.
